"Mobilegeddon" Proves Inconsistent for Non-Mobile-Friendly Sites

Now that it's been two weeks since "Mobilegeddon," as Google's recent algorithm update has been known around the Internet, we're taking a look at the changes. When developing a keyword strategy for a website it’s easy to look at basic keyword research (search volume, competition and trends) and stop there. Unfortunately, when you just look at these basic factors, a lot of opportunity is missed.

One great insight that is often overlooked is current site rankings. I’m not referring to traditional ranking tools where you input your keywords and it tells you where you rank. I am referring to more advanced tools such as Data Cube, which is a part of BrightEdge. In Data Cube all you need to do is input a URL and it will return every keyword the site ranks for, including search volume and the specific landing page. OTAs dominate search for travel deals

Video content has a higher CTR than ‘classic’ content

BrightEdge released a study showing that video content gets more clicks than classic (a.k.a. written) content. Before getting into the fact that web copy is now considered ‘classic,’* this finding suggests marketers can’t afford to ignore video if they want their SEO strategies to be successful.

Interestingly, the data shows that video broadly gets more clicks in search, but CTR fluctuates across the page.

Videos actually get a lower CTR if they’re shown as the No. 1 result compared to written pieces, but it flips for the No. 2 spot. Videos that rank second have a 5 percent higher click rate than written pieces, and continue to have a better CTR through the 7th result.

Is Organic Better for You? It Is When You're Talking About Site Traffic

When it comes to driving internet users to a website, nothing beats organic search. According to data from BrightEdge, organic search drove 51% of website traffic referrals worldwide during June and July 2014. Meanwhile, display, email and referred search ranked second, with 34% of referrals, paid search third (10%), and social media last (5%). The research monitored data from BrightEdge’s Data Cube, so broader industry metrics may vary.

Of course, website traffic referral share varied by industry, and organic dominated the business services space the most, fueling 73% of all site referrals. Organic’s share of traffic referrals huddled around 50% for media and entertainment, technology and internet, and hospitality sites, while retail rounded out the list (42%). Display, email and referred sources as well as social each grabbed their largest pieces of the pie in the media and entertainment space, while paid search was most successful at driving website traffic in the retail industry.

Organic Search Trumps Paid Search as Web-Traffic Driver

The data is clear: When it comes to driving web traffic, organic search reigns supreme.

A report from BrightEdge found that organic drives 51 percent of all visitors for business-to-business and business-to-consumer businesses. Among other forms of search, paid search accounted for just 10 percent of traffic, while social captured a tiny 5 percent. Other forms, including display, email, and referred traffic, captured 34 percent.

BrightEdge also examined the variations in search across industries. For business services, organic searches accounted for a whopping 73 percent of traffic. Media and entertainment came in second, with 51 percent of traffic deriving from organic. For both industries, paid search and social made little comparative impact in overall traffic.

A recent study conducted by the company found that organic search drives 51% of all visitors to business-to-business and business-to-consumer Web sites, whereas paid-search drives 10% and social 5%. Content Gap Analysis Becoming Bigger Priority For Marketers

B2B marketers are not lacking when it comes to content. According to research from eMarketer, 91% of B2B marketers are using content marketing, and 60% create at least one piece of content a week.

New Research on Impact of Google’s ‘Pigeon’ Update

Have your Google Places search results been erratic lately? When Google released an update to its local search algorithm on (or around) July 24, named “Pigeon” by Search Engine Land analysts, it dramatically affected a number of industry verticals.

Our SEO analysts looked to BrightEdge’ Data Cube before and after the Pigeon update (June through August), analyzing all U.S. desktop queries for which Google displayed Google Places (the “local pack”) results in its SERPs, bucketing those queries into industry groups (verticals) based on their keyword structure.

BrightEdge’s analysis found that Google is displaying local pack results for 11.26 percent fewer queries overall. BrightEdge Cube data also confirms that real estate queries experienced a dramatic decrease of 63.45 percent in their appearance rate in Google Places results.

After analyzing “billions of pieces” of content, content marketing firm BrightEdge claims organic search is the primary driver of website traffic to business sites, while social barely generates a blip on the traffic radar.

The BrightEdge study found organic search drives 51 percent of all visitors to B2B and B2C websites, trumping all other non-organic search channels, including paid search (10%) and social (5%).

BrightEdge went beyond breaking down traffic sources to examine how traffic is distributed by industry.

According to the study, organic search traffic accounted for 73 percent of all traffic to business services site, more than a 20 percent jump from the 51 percent when evaluating organic search across all sites.

Misconfigured Mobile Sites are Losing Traffic [Study]

A recent report by BrightEdge found that one in four mobile sites are losing traffic due to configuration errors: “Twenty-seven percent of mobile sites are ranked lower than they should be because Google and other search engines do not recognize the mobile site as related to its desktop counterpart.”

The study analyzed billions of queries and determined that “62 percent of organic searches show different results depending on whether the search was performed on a desktop or smartphone.”

BrightEdge considered mobile configuration in terms of separate URLs (dedicated mobile sites), dynamic serving and responsive design. Dedicated mobile sites evidenced a 72 percent error rate and dynamic serving errors amounted to 30 percent; no errors were found with responsive design.

What comes to mind when you think of LinkedIn?

Probably two things: a huge social network, and a great place for recruiting or finding a job.

True enough. LinkedIn these days is, in fact, 225 million members strong. And 70 percent of Brandz's Top 100 advertises jobs on LinkedIn. But I'm going to suggest that this answer doesn't go far enough. Something's missing: it's that LinkedIn is also a fantastic marketing platform. In fact, while most of us have been busy posting our resumes and contacting old friends, some of the world's top brands have learned to leverage their employees as brand ambassadors, as well as to maximize customer evangelists to grow brand awareness, and ultimately drive business.

So, let's explore from this different perspective just what it is that LinkedIn provides.

In a recent report released by BrightEdge, an enterprise SEO company, stats were released showing correlation between social buttons and social shares. Data showed that pages that displayed the Tweet button saw 7 times more social media mentions than pages that didn’t feature the button. This data was pulled from the “top 10,000 sites on the web.”
